Innovative thinking comes naturally to Bobcat. That's because this company has been thinking about utility vehicles in brand-new ways for a long time. Before Bobcat began, there were no machines on the market that were tough enough and yet not too large. Cyril and Louis Keller set out to change all that. The two brothers, blacksmiths from Rothsay, Minnesota, were highly skilled machinists. Their ability to create new ways of thinking transformed the industry.
A New Idea
One day, a local turkey farmer approached the two brothers and asked for their help. The second floor of his barn had too much manure. The tractors of that era were too bulky and inefficient to do the job properly. While the Keller brothers didn't have a machine on hand that could get the job done at that time, they knew they could create one.
Careful Design
A short time later the turkey farmer had exactly what he needed. The two brothers had spent a lot time examining his needs and figuring out how to serve them. The world's first three-wheeled compact loader was born. Other farmers noticed this brand new machine and admired all it could do. They asked for similar equipment from the Keller brothers. Within the next decade, the brothers enjoyed rapid expansion into their area's market and beyond. That was when they brought in four Melroe brothers to help them create a company that was ready to serve. The compact equipment industry was established. The rest is history.

By 1958, the Melroe and Keller brothers decided it was time to give their company a name that would stand out in the public mind. They settled on Bobcat.
