Whether you’re in the construction or agriculture industry, you need a powerful tool to help complete your projects quickly. Having a skid steer can make your work day much more efficient! However, there are many different skid steers on the market, so it can be difficult to choose the right one. Our team at Bobcat® of Cape Cod would love to help you select the right option.

Start With a Budget

Before you begin shopping for the right skid steer for your operation, it’s important to set a budget. Different models will vary in price, so as you consider your preferences, remember that some features will cost more.

As you complete your research and determine what is best for your operation, it can also be helpful to decide how you’d like to shop for your skid steer: new, used, at auction or with a private seller.

Consider the Size

Skid steers are available in different sizes, ranging from compact to large. There are a few factors you should consider before determining what size is best for you.

First, think about your work space and general projects. If you frequently have to navigate through several obstacles, you may want to consider a smaller model. On the other hand, if you need to move heavy materials, a larger skid steer would likely work better for you.

Second, think about the lift height you will need for the jobs you’ll complete. Sometimes greater weight capacity is separate from the height capacity! If you need to put materials into dump trucks or in elevated bins, you should make sure to select a model with a sturdy frame and larger engine.

Finally, don’t forget to consider how you’ll transport the skid steer between work sites! Larger models may need to be trailered.

Consider the Fuel Type

You will most often find skid steers that operate with diesel fuel, but you can select gas models. Diesel engines can be a bit more costly to maintain, but they have incredible efficiency and power. Gasoline engines might be better if you live in an area where diesel is more difficult to find.

Operator Features

Another aspect you may want to consider is how comfortable the skid steer is for the operator and what additional features are available in the cab. Although comfort can seem like a luxury, it has proven to increase productivity. Long hours can feel a lot longer when you’re uncomfortable!

Some models have adjustable seating with more cushion, allowing you to create the perfect space for your height and arm span.
