What is a Telehandler?
Many worksites require a tool that can effectively lift, move, and place materials. Telehandlers are perfect for this task! They’re designed to reach elevated spaces and are a popular choice for many different industries. Our team at Bobcat® of Cape Cod is excited to help you get to know these incredible machines.
Classification
Telehandlers are classified as a Class 7 vehicle or a variable reach rough terrain forklift. They are multi-use machines that can be used with many different attachments and tools. They’re specifically designed to lift, move, and place items and materials.
When they were first designed and introduced in 1977, they were referred to as a telescopic forklift. The terminology was used to describe the combination of a crane, backhoe, and forklift now known as a telehandler!
Uses
The construction industry was the first true application of telehandlers, but several other industries have begun using this equipment for various purposes. Some of the most common uses today include:
- Moving hay bales
- Placing objects at higher elevations
- Lift platform for workers and materials
- Moving different jobsite equipment
Telehandlers are great because they’re designed to operate in tough conditions and through variable terrains. Many models are equipped with four wheel drive capabilities as well.
Safety
Whether you need a telehandler for your jobsite or for use around the farm, it’s important to always understand the limitations and safe operating procedures associated with the machinery. All operators should complete training before use and should have a strong understanding of the telehandler’s capabilities. Pushing weight limits and its intended use can result in damage and injury.
Always refer to the owner’s manual for specific information regarding operation protocols and equipment features. It’s also important to only operate equipment that has been properly maintained.
Maintenance
Speaking of maintaining equipment, telehandlers can be relatively simple to maintain! You’ll have to regularly inspect the machine to keep up with servicing, but the main items to care for include tires, electrical components, and hydraulic systems.
